Centre for Technology Alternatives for Rural Areas (CTARA), ITT Bombay
Centre for Technology Alternatives for Rural Areas (CTARA) was established at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay in 1985 for the sole purpose of responding to the technological needs of rural areas. From its inception, CTARA has been working on developing and disseminating technologies in diverse fields which are relevant to rural areas through its research projects and Ph.D. program. The Centre has geared itself to face the challenges posed by global and national changes, through its academic programs namely, M. Tech. program in Technology and Development since July 2007. Since 1985, CTARA has designed and built prototypes. From 2003, the Centre has also been working for the Khadi and Village Industries Commission by setting up a “Technology Interface Unit” at CTARA to expressly provide science and technology inputs to rural industries. CTARA students and faculty get to conduct their experimental work in a workshop (wood and Metal Working), Food Engineering lab and also in the fields of associated NGOs with whom CTARA has close contacts.
